Councilman Garcia's Swearing-In Speech

Councilman Roman Garcia was officially sworn into office on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the Cailloux Theater.  Upon his swearing-in, he became one of the youngest sitting elected officials in the State of Texas.  Below is the video of his speech at the City Council meeting.

Good Evening,

Thank you all for participating in this respected practice of handing over the torch.

Thank you for giving me the privilege to serve as your City Council member.  I am honored to serve the people of the community where I was raised.  I owe a great deal to my family, my friends, the community for supporting me and working hard alongside me to achieve this goal.  Thank you all who endorsed me, financially supported the campaign, to those who worked tirelessly and countless hours putting up signs, making calls, knocking on doors, bringing us food at the polls, and holding up signs at the courthouse and here at the Cailloux Theater.  Whether it was hailing, whether it was raining, whether it was sunny outside, you were there.  And thank you to the congregation of Impact church for your support and prayers.  I would love to be able to recognize each individual who supported me along this way, but I didn’t want to leave anybody out.  And most of you are here tonight, and I acknowledge you, and I thank you.  Because without you, I couldn’t have achieved this otherwise.

Just five years ago, I was sitting in the audience watching a City Council meeting, and that’s where I became fascinated with the work that this body can do.  That’s where I found my interest to serve my community in government.  And now I can say that all the hard work and preparation has paid off.  And now, I get the privilege of representing and being of service to all of the people of Kerrville.  But I am going to continue to need your help moving forward.  This is our City, and most importantly, this is our home.

To my fellow council members, mayor, and city staff, I look forward to working with you.  I look forward to the deliberations that we will have, to the feedback that I will receive from the citizens, to consider all sides of every matter that comes before me.  With every decision I will make, it will be to put the true needs of the citizens first and to facilitate a sustaining future for generations to come.  Accomplishing this goal will take teamwork and sacrifice.  But I’m up for the challenge.

Kerrville, thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility and giving me the opportunity to serve you.  I humbly take this torch, and I will carry it with honor.

Now, let’s get to work.

Thank you!
